Custom Iron Castings for Industrial Applications
Iron Casting
Iron casting is where the G&W Foundry story began in 1932. Today, cast iron is found in almost all durable goods and machinery, prized for its strength, wear resistance, and excellent machinability. We specialize in the two most critical types of iron for modern industry: Grey Iron and Ductile Iron, providing custom-fit solutions for a virtually unlimited range of applications.
Grey Iron is favored for its exceptional ability to dampen vibrations and its high thermal conductivity, making it the material of choice for engine blocks, machine tool bases, and brake components. Ductile Iron, with its addition of magnesium, offers superior strength and "ductility" (the ability to deform without fracturing), making it an ideal substitute for steel in many heavy-duty applications. At G&W, we help our clients select the exact grade of iron—such as Class 30, 40, or 60 for grey iron, or 65-45-12 for ductile iron—to match the specific mechanical requirements of their project.
Our iron casting process is a model of precision and consistency. We utilize induction furnaces to achieve exact metallurgical compositions and automated pouring systems to maintain uniform temperatures. Whether the project is a domestic "Made in America" run or a cost-optimized offshore production, we apply the same rigorous quality standards. We can supply everything from rapid prototypes to serial quantities of fully machined iron parts.
With over 90 years of experience, we have mastered the nuances of iron chemistry and solidification. We understand how to prevent common defects and how to optimize the "pearlitic" or "ferritic" structure of the iron for the best performance. From the stoves and spare parts of our founder’s day to the complex industrial components of the 21st century, G&W remains a global leader in high-quality iron casting.
